Homelessness in Prison Releases

Quite simply, the statistics are staggering. One in ten people in England say they have personal experience of homelessness; and the number of people released from prison into street homelessness is no different.

In 2019 HMP Elmley released almost 500 people into homelessness, around 40% of all releases.

Together Kent is involved with a number of different projects to support people who are experiencing homelessness in Kent. These include Winter Night Shelters and drop-in sessions to provide relief for immediate needs such as food, clothing and healthcare. The Break the Cycle campaign is a joint partnership project with the Diocese of Canterbury, Catching Lives and CampaignKent with the aim of helping those released from prison into homelessness find and keep long term accommodation.
